Begin with a useful distinction

Check the reading before fixing an amount of new material. Memorising an uncertain pronunciation can make later correction harder. Ask the teacher to hear the intended passage and clarify the practice task. Your starting target should reflect the time available for both learning and review, not just the excitement of beginning a fresh programme.

Make the next step practical

Separate immediate familiarity from later recall. A passage repeated many times can feel secure at the end of a session and still need support the next day. Keep a place for recent revision and for older material. Ask how each will be checked and how a difficult review affects the amount of new work. That makes retention part of the plan from the beginning.

Notice what the experience tells you

Record the kind of difficulty rather than only the number of mistakes. Is the hesitation at a transition, in a similar passage or at the beginning of a section? These observations can help the teacher choose a useful exercise. Repeating everything without identifying the weak point may consume time while leaving the same uncertainty untouched.

Keep the plan clear enough to return to

Prepare a maintenance plan for demanding weeks. If exams, work or travel reduce capacity, discuss protecting existing material rather than adding new lines automatically. A smaller agreed task can keep the routine connected. Avoid treating a reduced load as a personal failure; the objective is learning that remains available, not a record of ambitious assignments that cannot be sustained.

A review record that reveals more than a page total

Divide a simple review note into the material attempted, where prompts were needed and what the teacher advised. You do not need a complicated tracking application to recognise a recurring transition or a passage that becomes confused with another. Keep the record brief enough that maintaining it does not replace the actual practice.

When reviewing the plan, look at retention across time rather than only the latest successful recitation. Ask how the information should affect new work. If a passage repeatedly needs support, the next task may involve a targeted return instead of adding more material. This makes the record a tool for teaching decisions rather than a display of how much has supposedly been completed.

A revision log you can copy

Use four headings in a notebook: new passage, recent revision, older revision and recall notes. Record the passage references agreed with your teacher. Under recall notes, distinguish a hesitation resolved independently from a prompt supplied by someone else.

At the next lesson, show the pattern rather than only the amount covered. If older passages repeatedly require prompts, ask whether the balance between new memorization and revision should change. The teacher should set the workload from demonstrated retention; this example is not a fixed Hifz schedule.
